COVID-19: What to Expect When Checking into a Hotel

Updated: Tuesday — July 7th, 2020
Hotel check-in is one of the many things that has changed in the COVID-19 era and perhaps, in many ways, these changes are in the best interest of frequent travelers. Hotels, resorts, and lodging facilities are taking on new safety protocols to protect their guests and employees. Your experience may include face masks, hand sanitizer, and amazing views — but sorry, no continental breakfast or turn-down service. Here are a few things you and your traveling personnel can expect on your next hotel visit.
Virtual Check-In
The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way most businesses operate, and hotels are no exception. You can expect to reserve and check-in for your reservation online. If you are a seasoned traveler, you may use this option already. Registration will begin before you even arrive, with form-filling and credit-card authorizations completed on the web as well.
Face Coverings and Reception
As you walk into the hotel, you may see signs informing you that you are required to wear a face covering. Don’t feel singled out because shortly, you will be greeted by the front desk staff who is required to wear a mask too. Since most hotels are switching to virtual check-in, guests will only need to stop at the reception desk to pick up a room key — a disposable one which will likely be passed under a large plexiglass sneeze guard. Some hotels even curated an app to make check-in as smooth as possible — providing their guests with updated information explaining safety procedures implemented at their hotel, updates to their food/bar service, housekeeping, and most importantly the wifi password.
Hotel Perks Replaced with Precaution
For the time being — don’t expect the usual hotel perks such as, complimentary coffee, tea, and fruit-infused water, nor the free continental breakfast and evening cookies and milk. Try not to take offense as these establishments are trying to take every precaution necessary for their guests’ protection. Unfortunately, that means limited to contact-less hotel stays.
